vCard QR Code Guide: Share Contact Details Faster and Smarter

If someone has to type your phone number, email, company, and website by hand, you are adding friction at the exact moment you want a follow-up. A contact QR code fixes that: one scan, and the phone offers to save you as a new contact.

This guide explains the formats behind contact QR codes, what each one looks like, which ones work with MultipleQR, and how to create codes for a whole team without typing each card by hand.

Three Ways to Put a Contact in a QR Code

When people say “vCard QR code” they usually mean any QR code that saves a contact. There are three practical approaches:

ApproachWhat the code containsWorks in MultipleQR?
vCardA multi-line BEGIN:VCARD text blockNot directly (see below)
MECARDA single-line contact stringYes
Link to a contact page or .vcf fileA URLYes

The vCard Format

vCard is the standard contact file format used by phones, email clients, and address books. A basic vCard 3.0 looks like this:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Rivera;Ana;;;
FN:Ana Rivera
ORG:Example Studio
TITLE:Sales Manager
TEL;TYPE=CELL:+15551234567
EMAIL;TYPE=WORK:ana@example.com
URL:https://example.com
ADR;TYPE=WORK:;;100 Main St;Springfield;IL;62701;USA
END:VCARD

Each field goes on its own line:

  • N is the structured name: last name; first name; middle; prefix; suffix.
  • FN is the display name.
  • ORG and TITLE are company and job title.
  • TEL, EMAIL, and URL are phone, email, and website. Use international phone format with the country code.
  • ADR is the address, split by semicolons: PO box; extended; street; city; region; postal code; country.

An Honest Limitation: MultipleQR Is One Value per Line

MultipleQR turns each line of your input into a separate QR code. That is what makes bulk generation fast, but it also means a multi-line vCard cannot be pasted as-is: the example above would become eleven separate codes, one per line, and none of them would save a contact. Joining the lines together does not help either, because the vCard format depends on those line breaks.

For a true vCard QR code, you have two options: use the MECARD format below, or host a .vcf file and encode its link.

MECARD: The Single-Line Alternative

MECARD is a compact contact format designed specifically for QR codes. The whole contact fits on one line, which makes it a perfect match for a one-value-per-line generator:

MECARD:N:Rivera,Ana;ORG:Example Studio;TEL:+15551234567;EMAIL:ana@example.com;URL:https://example.com;ADR:100 Main St\, Springfield\, IL 62701;;

The rules:

  • Start with MECARD: and end with ;;.
  • Each field is KEY:value;.
  • N takes last name and first name separated by a comma: N:Rivera,Ana;.
  • Common fields are N, TEL, EMAIL, URL, ADR, and NOTE. ORG is widely supported by scanners even though it was not part of the original specification.
  • Escape special characters inside values with a backslash: \; for semicolons, \, for commas, and \\ for backslashes. That is why the commas inside the address above are written as \,. The original specification also lists colons, but scanners generally read a normal https:// link without escaping.

Support for MECARD is common among Android scanner apps and many built-in camera apps, but behavior varies by device and operating system version. Always test on both iPhone and Android before printing.

If you want the full vCard with every field, save it as a .vcf file (most phones and email clients can export a contact as one), upload it to your website or a file host, and encode the link to that file. When scanned, the phone opens the link and typically offers to import the contact.

A variation is a simple contact page on your own site with a “Save contact” button that downloads the .vcf. The benefit of a link is flexibility: if your phone number changes, you replace the file at the same URL and the printed code keeps working. The downside is that the scan requires an internet connection. The same hosting advice applies as in our PDF QR code guide.

Step-by-Step: Contact QR Codes for a Whole Team

  1. Collect details in a spreadsheet: first name, last name, company, mobile, email, website.
  2. Build a MECARD string per person with a formula that joins the columns, for example ="MECARD:N:"&B2&","&A2&";TEL:"&D2&";EMAIL:"&E2&";;".
  3. Check for special characters. Names or addresses containing commas or semicolons need a backslash before them.
  4. Copy the finished column and paste it into MultipleQR, one contact per line. Pasting or uploading a TXT file is the safest path; in a CSV upload, each comma-separated cell becomes its own code, so values containing commas must be wrapped in quotes.
  5. Download the ZIP. Files are numbered in list order, so match them against your spreadsheet.
  6. Test a sample on iPhone and Android and confirm every field lands in the right place.
  7. Send each person their PNG for business cards, badges, or slides.

What to Include

Only include what helps the next step happen. A strong contact code usually has:

  • Name
  • Mobile number in international format
  • Business email
  • Website or portfolio
  • Company name

Every extra field makes the code denser and harder to scan at small sizes. A full address on a business-card-sized code is often what pushes it from easy to frustrating.

Placement Ideas

  • Business cards (back side, at least 2 cm wide)
  • Event and trade show badges
  • The last slide of a presentation
  • Proposals and printed leave-behinds
  • Real estate signs and flyers
  • Reception desks and meeting rooms

Add a short line such as “Scan to save my contact” so people know what will happen.

Common Mistakes

  • Pasting a multi-line vCard into a one-value-per-line tool and printing the first code without testing.
  • Forgetting to escape commas in MECARD values, which splits a field or breaks the contact.
  • Local phone formats. Use + and the country code so the number works for international contacts.
  • Too much data. Denser codes need to be printed larger. See the QR code size guide.
  • No test on both platforms. Contact parsing differs between devices.

Checklist

  • Format chosen: MECARD for offline, a hosted link for full detail and easy updates
  • Special characters escaped
  • Phone numbers in international format
  • Codes generated one contact per line
  • Scanned on iPhone and Android
  • Label next to the code
  • Printed large enough for the amount of data

FAQ

Can I paste a full vCard into MultipleQR? Not as-is. MultipleQR creates one code per line, and vCard needs line breaks. Use MECARD or encode a link to a hosted .vcf file.

Does a contact QR code need internet? MECARD codes work offline because the data is inside the code. Links to .vcf files or contact pages need a connection.

Can I update the contact after printing? Not with MECARD, since the data is fixed in the code. With a hosted .vcf file on your own site, replace the file at the same URL.

Is it free? Yes. MultipleQR is free, requires no signup, and exports standard PNG files.

Final Takeaway

A contact QR code turns an introduction into a saved contact. Choose MECARD for a compact, offline code, or link to a hosted vCard when you want every field and the ability to update. Build your list, paste it into MultipleQR, and generate cards for the whole team in one batch.
